Tire Tips for Safer winter Driving

Properly maintained tires improve vehicle performance, maintain fuel economy, and help prevent accidents and breakdowns. Everyone should be aware of tire safety in order to keep themselves and others safe, so we compiled a list of tire tips for safer driving.

Choose your tires carefully. Too many drivers purchase tires based on price or appearance. Tire selection should be  based on the correct size recommended for your vehicle and its load. Consult with a knowledgeable sales associate to help find the right choice.

Check tire pressure once a month. Underinflation and over inflation can cause various issues on the road. Most tire pressure charts can be found on the inside of your driver’s side door.

Perform weekly tire inspections.  Look for signs of damage such as exposed steel belts, sidewall gashes, or signs of uneven wear.

Rotate your tires with every oil change. This will not only extend the life of your tires, but also provide you with a much smoother ride.

Inspect and measure tire tread. An easy way to do this is with a penny! Insert the penny between the tread of a tire with Lincoln’s head upside down. If any part of his head is hidden, your tires are good to go for a bit longer. If you see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is too low and it’s time to replace your tire.

Have your tire balance checked periodically. An unbalanced tire and wheel assembly may result in irregular wear.

Check alignment every year. Just one pothole can damage your car’s alignment and have a negative ripple effect on your tires.

Keep your spare in great condition. As you visually inspect your tires, don’t forget to check the spare. Check for proper inflation and signs of damage to ensure it’s ready for action if you need it.

Slow down during wet weather. This will provide better traction and prevent hydroplaning.

Tires are such an important part of our automobiles. By following these tips and keeping your tires well  maintained , your travels will be safe, enjoyable, and affordable. Happy Tire Month!
